"Today is our day," Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl proclaimed on Friday to a room filled with members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as the city launched its first LGBT Heritage Month.
"Every other group has had its heritage month. It's time we came of age," said Rosendahl, who is the third openly gay member of the City Council, after former Councilman Joel Wachs and Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the designation highlights the history and accomplishments of the city's LGBT community and underscores the rights of individuals.
"This is a groundbreaking event," and it's no coincidence it is happening here," Villaraigosa said. "Los Angeles has always been a city where people don't care who are, who your father was or if you have two fathers or two mothers. This is a city where we just say, `Do it."'
Villaraigosa also issued Spirit of Los Angeles Award to the Rev. Troy Perry, gay-marriage advocate Chad Griffin and comedian Wanda Sykes for their efforts on behalf of the LGBT community.
