Student shot twice while walking to Jefferson High School in South LA

LOS ANGELES - A student was shot twice today while walking to Jefferson High School in southeast Los Angeles, but his wounds were not believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.

The shooting, which happened about 7:25 a.m. at a park near 41st Street and Compton Avenue, prompted a brief precautionary lockdown of the nearby campus, said Officer Lyle Knight of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations office.

There were no arrests, Knight said.

The male student, who just turned 18, was hospitalized with wounds to his leg and hip, said Susan Cox of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The 12th grader is enrolled in the teacher preparation program at the school, according to a school official.
