Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward competes on ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars' with Kym Johnson.LOS ANGELES - He's a Pittsburgh Steeler, not a car stealer.
Still, wide receiver Hines Ward was removed from a car at gunpoint and cuffed by Los Angeles police early Thursday in a dramatic misunderstanding.
The MVP of Super Bowl XL and top-ranked contestant on this season's "Dancing with the Stars" was riding in a car driven by a female friend when cops pulled it over around 1:30 a.m. in North Hollywood, police said.
"They ran the plate and saw that it was a stolen car," a police source told the News. "Remember, a stolen vehicle is a felony and there are certain practices officers will adhere to."
Turns out the friend had reported the vehicle stolen due to an earlier incident with a valet and simply forgot to cancel the alert, according to TMZ.com.
"It was a big mishap. Once the officers confirmed the vehicle belonged to the woman who was with him, they let them go," the source said.
"I want everyone to know that this was a complete misunderstanding," the wide receiver, 35, said on Twitter. "The police were just doing their job. Apologies were made and it's now in the past. Moving forward."
