Critic's Corner Wednesday: 'Idol' Top 3, 'SVU' finale

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

?If the American Idol (Fox, tonight, 8 ET/PT) Top 3 isn't as worthy a trio as it could have been ? and it isn't ? let's put the blame squarely where it belongs: on the three judges, who started strong and worked their way down to superfluous.

  • Mariska Hargitay's Detective Benson could be in the line of fire in the season finale of 'Law & Order: SVU.'

Had they been doing their jobs, and, say, told James at some point to stop screeching and start at least feigning humility, he might have had enough of a fan base to get where his talent should have taken him.

And had they delivered a few more stern words in general where needed, the relatively gentle remarks they aimed at Haley might not have seemed shocking enough to rally her supporters.

Oh, and much of America might not be bored out of its gourd by now by weeks of "you're all just so fabulous" non-critiques.

It almost makes you think the whole season was a nefarious Fox plan to make us miss Simon and boost his new show.

?A winner will be crowned tonight, but not on Idol. It's on CW's America's Next Top Model (9 ET/PT), which picks its victor in one compact hour.
