hugh martin deadSongwriter Hugh Martin died Friday, March 11, in his home in Encitas, Calif. The 96-year-old composer, arranger, pianist and lyricist was known for writing classic Judy Garland-sung tunes like 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,' 'The Trolley Song' and 'The Boy Next Door.' All three tunes came from the 1944 film 'Meet Me in St. Louis.'

Niece Suzanne Hanners confirmed Martin's death to the New York Times. Born in Birmingham, Ala., Martin is survived by a brother, Gordon.

The Times calls 'Merry Little Christmas' "one of a triumvirate of achingly wistful seasonal ballads from World War II (the others are 'White Christmas' and 'I'll Be Home for Christmas') to have transcended their era."
