Courteney Cox: I still 'have strong feelings' for David Arquette

Courteney Cox, seven years older than David Arquette, has 'always been a little bit of a cougar.'

Last fall, David Arquette told his side of the story regarding his split from his wife, Courteney Cox. And then he told it again. And then he told it a few more times.

But now Cox is presenting her perspective in her most in-depth interview since she and Arquette separated in June of last year.

"I think every relationship has a point where you stop and reevaluate. Are you happy? Have you grown together or apart? What do you share interests in?" she said in the April issue of Harper's Bazaar. "I think that's a normal thing to do, but it's so much harder when it's done publicly."

It was Cox's idea to try a trial separation after what she called "a moment of looking at our relationship."

Though Arquette has said on more than one occasion that the actress was tired of being his "mother," Cox contends that "there wasn't anything in particular," but the self-reflection "brought up a lot of stuff."

The "Cougar Town" star, 46, even goes as far as defending 39-year-old Arquette, who, at best, came off in his interviews as a cheater and, at worst, as a drug- and booze-addicted partyer.

"He absolutely did nothing that wasn't in the boundaries of what we set for our separation, so there's nothing to judge," Cox said of his post-split dalliance with waitress Jasmine Waltz. "I may not have known about it, but that's the only difference."

Cox dismissed rumors that she is more than friends with co-star Brian Van Holt. 'He's a really good friend of mine, so I don't care,' she said. (Terry Richardson/Harper's Bazaar)

And although Cox wasn't exactly thrilled with the actor's no-holds-barred chats with Howard Stern, she doesn't hold them against Arquette.

"You can't really get mad at David because he's not a malicious person. He was dealing with things the best way he could," she explained to the magazine. "And don't get me wrong, he was on a show for entertainment. David is smart, and David is also a showman. He knew what he was doing."

"I don't know what's going to happen, but I don't think he'll be doing more Howard Stern anytime soon," she added. "He's not out to harm. But I'm his biggest protector. I can't help it."

Cox ? who said working on the upcoming "Scream 4" together was "very special" despite their troubles because they "fell in love" while making the first installment ? admitted she has "no desire to date right now."

"I'm not saying never," she said. "It just seems weird."

Of course, Cox's future love life also hinges on what happens with Arquette.

"We loved each other so much, and if anything I feel like we've been extremely successful at marriage. If it doesn't work out, I will have huge waves of pain about failing in that department," she said. "But right now I don't have that because I don't know what the future holds and I guess because I have strong feelings for him."

Still, it all comes back to that reevaluation.

"The thing is, when you get older, it's more about compatibility than it is about love. I think it's more about needing just a kind of peace and stillness," Cox said.

"I'm kind of all over the place, and I need grounding. I want to be calm. I want to change a lot. I want to live not outside but inside," she said. "It's nothing with David; it's just what I'm searching for."
